Foreign Language and Literature

I. Cultivation Goal

With the goal of “double first-class” construction at Dalian University of Technology to cultivate high-standard top-notch innovative talents with both moral quality and international vision itis our duty to foster high-level foreign language specialized talents with all-round moral, intellectual and physical development, in order to meet the needs of China's socialist modernization and social development. The specific are as follows:

1) being patriotic, law-abiding, morally good, rigorous in scientific research and learning style, so as to make necessary contributions to national construction and development;

2) mastering the basic theories and systematic specialized knowledge of foreign language and literature as well as basic foreign language research methods, and grasping the academic research trends in related fields;

3) adhering to the general norms of academic research, and finishing the dissertation in accordance with them;

4) having the ability to engage in foreign language research at a high level, or independently undertake foreign language related work.

II. Introduction of disciplines

This discipline covers three secondary disciplines: English Language and Literature, Japanese Language and Literature, Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. In these we have achieved several academic results, including: leading 22 national projects (20 social science funds, 1 natural science funds), and 20 humanities and social science projects with the Ministry of Education in the past five years. Moreover, we have published a total of 16 SCI, SSCI and A&HCI papers, 74 CSSCI retrieval papers, of which 17 influential academic papers have been published in well-known foreign language journals, 40 academic monographs, and 32 translations. We have won 3 first prizes in Liaoning Province for teaching achievements and have 1 national quality video demonstration class and 1 Research base in Liaoning Province for Economic and Social Development and Belarus Research Center. DUT has also opened three academic platforms: the academic quarterly journalForeign Language Education, theLiterature and Hermeneuticsjournal, and the Annual Advanced Seminar on Pragmatics, which enjoys a high academic reputation at home and abroad in the fields of literary philosophy, translation of classics, discourse analysis, language cognition, Japanese language and education, and cultural diplomacy. In October 2019, it was officially ranked 25th in the top 11% of the national foreign language subjects.

2.1 English Language and Literature

This discipline is comprised of 5 research orientations: Literary Philosophy, Western Literary Theory, British and American Literature, English Linguistics, and Regional Country Research. Literary Philosophy includes literary philosophy theory research, literary hermeneutics research, poetics research and novel philosophy research. Western Literary Theory includes western literary theory research, postmodern literary theory research and Marxist literary theory research. British and American Literature includes British modern and contemporary literature research, American modern and contemporary literature research and British and American poetry research. English Linguistics includes pragmatic discourse analysis, pragmatic grammar research, doctor-patient discourse and court discourse communication model research, morphology and semantics research. Regional Country Research includes cultural diplomacy research, regional security research and country research.

2.2 Japanese language and literature

This discipline is comprised of 4 research orientations: Japanese Linguistics, Japanese Literature, Japanese Culture, and Translation. Japanese Linguistics includes comparative research of Chinese and Japanese languages, Japanese grammar research, second language acquisition research and sociolinguistics research. Japanese Literature includes Japanese rhyming literature, comparative research of Chinese and Japanese poetry and modern and contemporary Japanese literature research. Japanese Culture includes cross-cultural speech act research, cross-cultural communicative competence research, cultural acquisition and cultural teaching research. Translation includes corpus-based translation teaching research and foreign-related translation research in the administrative field.

II.3 Foreign Linguistics and applied Linguistics

This discipline is comprised of 3 research orientations: Linguistics in both English and Russian languages, Applied Linguistics in English and Translatology. Linguistics in English includes research on semantics, pragmatics, cognitive linguistics, syntax, contemporary discourse and translation. Linguistics in Russian includes research on pragmatics, semantics, rhetoric, cognitive linguistics, cultural diplomacy and countries. Applied Linguistics in English includes research on applied linguistic theory, language acquisition, psycholinguistics, cognitive neurolinguistics, English teaching methods, discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, computational linguistics, cross-cultural communication and language testing. Translatology includes research on English translation of Chinese classics, the theory and practice of English translation of Chinese classics, the construction and application of Chinese-English bilingual and multilingual corpus of Chinese classics.

Translation

I. Cultivation Goal

With the core of a “training modal and system of professional translation talents with the characteristics of Dalian University of Technology” as well as the goal of “double first-class” construction to cultivate high-standard top-notch innovative talents with both moral quality and international vision, it is our duty to persistently explore ways to foster professional translators and interpreters. They should be proficient in relevant skills, familiar with certain professional knowledge of science and technology related disciplines, have strong Chinese and Western cultural literacy and cross-cultural communication ability and have good professional ethics, in order to properly engage themselves in sci-tech translation, Chinese classics translation, Chinese culture translation, business translation, historical documents translation and other translation work. Furthermore, our students should be able to adapt to the social, economic and cultural construction needs of the country, Liaoning Province and Dalian City.

II. Introduction of the major

2.1 Professional field profile

Dalian University of Technology was granted the right to award the Master’s degree in Translation in 2010, and began to enroll the first graduate students in 2011. We offer English interpreting, English translation and Japanese translation, which mainly cultivates high-level, application-oriented and professional talents in the fields of scientific and technological translation, Chinese classical translation, Chinese culture translation, business translation, historical documents translation and other fields.

As the Point of authorization, We:

1) make full use of the scientific and technological translation platform of the university’s technological features to strengthen students’ relevant translation ability in the fields of chemical engineering, machinery, telecommunications, marine, civil engineering and so on;

2) improve students’ practical ability in major national needs such as translation of Chinese classics and Chinese culture and international communication of Chinese culture, relying on the advantages of teachers in scientific research, translation and teaching;

3) raise students’ ability to translate historical documents such as written confessions of Japanese war criminals and national maritime security documents, in view of the major needs of regional development in Liaoning Province and Dalian City;

4) make full use of Dalian’s strategic geographical advantages as an international coastal metropolis to cultivate students’ bilingual translation ability in the field of business practice;

5) provide students with translation practice platforms such as simultaneous interpretation laboratory, Trados translation system, 3D foreign language virtual laboratory and foreign language wisdom classroom;

6) actively promote the internationalization process of student cultivation and improve students’ professional quality and comprehensive quality with full play to the role of “going out” and “bringing in” international cooperation and exchange platforms translation.

English Interpreting is characterized by a range of interpreting research and practices in science and technology interpreting, Chinese Culture interpreting, business interpreting, diplomatic and foreign affairs interpretating, legal/court interpreting, simulation conference interpreting, etc.

English and Japanese Translation are characterized with a range of translation research and practices in science and technology translation, Chinese classics translation, Chinese culture translation, historical documents translation, diplomatic and foreign affairs translation, political and economic translation, etc.
