SFL Undergraduate Program Overview

There are five undergraduate majors at the School of Foreign Languages: English, Translation, Japanese, Russian and Business English. Adhering to the concept of serving the national strategy and development, relying on the engineering advantages of our research-oriented university, the school has formed a unique “foreign language+” composite talent training model in the intersection of liberal arts and science.

Discipline strength

In 2001, DUT was granted the right to award master’s degrees in Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. In 2003, it was given the right to grant master's degrees in English Language and Literature. In 2010, it was granted the right to award master's degrees in the first-level discipline of Foreign Language and Literature. In 2012, it began to recruit doctoral students under the first-level discipline of Philosophy. In 2011, it was granted the right to award a master’s degree in Translation (MTI). In 2019, the English major was selected as the national first-class undergraduate major construction point, and the Japanese major and translation major followed in 2022. The Russian and Business English majors were selected as the first-class undergraduate education model major in Liaoning Province.

Teaching staff

The school has a high-level teaching and research team with 135 full-time teachers, including 21 professors and 71 associate professors. At present, the school undertakes 107 research projects at the provincial and ministerial level and above, taking a leading role in the fields of foreign literature, language cognition, discourse analysis, translation of classics, and Japanese studies, etc.

International exchange

The school has carried out student joint training and long-term and short-term exchange programs with many foreign universities, such as the “2+2” and “3+2” joint training programs with the University of Missouri in the United States and the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom. What’s more, it has conducted long-term and short-term exchange programs with the University of California, Irvine, Cardiff University, Osaka University, Waseda University, Yokohama National University, Belarus State University and Ural Federal University of Russia, which gives many students the chance to study abroad. On top of this, students can participate in Model United Nations activities, and even have the opportunity to discuss current world issues with students from all over the world at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Professional training

English (including English and translation majors)

In the first year, students receive general education, according to the broad categories of training. At the end of the first year, they will be divided into different majors according to their choice, and the following three years will be trained according to the corresponding professional training programs for their specific majors (English or Translation). Through 4-year cultivation, the English student should become a high-quality international and compound talent with comprehensive English and interdisciplinary qualities, strong thinking ability, practical ability, research ability, patriotic affection, global vision, and explorative spirit; the Translation major should develop high-quality and international interdisciplinary talents with excellent oral and written translation skills, profound Chinese and foreign cultural literacy, global vision, innovative thinking and cross-cultural communication skills.

Japanese

The Japanese major should grow into a high-quality international compound professional with broad global vision, solid basic Japanese skills, strong cross-cultural communication ability, certain economic and technological knowledge, master basic scientific research ability, and adapt to the economic and social development of the country.

Russian

The Russian major should be grown into a high-quality compound Russian professional with broad international vision, proficient Russian language skill, rich humanistic quality and scientific knowledge, basic scientific research skills, outstanding comprehensive ability and adaptability to the “Belt and Road” initiative.

Business English

The Business English major should be cultivated into an international and innovative talent with solid basic English language skills and business professional knowledge, strong abilities in cross-culture, business communication, innovation and entrepreneurship, and proficiency in using English to engage in international business and other foreign-related fields.

★ Note: The five majors only admit liberal arts candidates of English language who must pass the oral English test organized by the local recruitment office.

Business English

Industry: government agencies, universities and college with higher learning, research institutions, Chinese and foreign enterprises engaged in foreign affairs.
