On May 14th, 2022, the 8th National Forum for Postgraduates’ English Teaching and Development was held online. It was hosted by theDivision ofEnglish Teaching and Research, Beijing Association of Higher Education, and organized by School of Foreign Languages, Dalian University of Technology (DUT) and China Renmin University Press. Over 300 scholars and teachers in foreign languages from around China attended the online forum.

Professor Lu Anhui, Associate Vice President of DUT, attended the opening ceremony and delivered an opening speech. Professor Lu Anhui introduced DUT’s general situation of “double world-class project” construction, and the construction of world-class majors and disciplines in the School of Foreign Languages, DUT. The construction of “New Liberal Arts” ushers in new challenges for the development of foreign language disciplines in China’s higher education, and provides new opportunities as well. The forum will inspire the exploration of postgraduates’ general English teaching and development, foster a diversified teaching environment, and facilitate the exchange of postgraduates’ teaching experience among universities and colleges in China. The attended experts hoped to jointly promote the development of Chinese postgraduates’ English teaching through sufficient communication to gain inspiration and gather wisdom during the forum. Professor Chen Hongjun, Dean of the School of Foreign Languages, DUT, introduced new explorations and conceptions on postgraduates’ English teaching conducted by the School of Foreign Languages in recent years. Professor Gao Yuan, Chairman of theDivision ofEnglish Teaching and Research, Beijing Association of Higher Education, and Ju Fang’an, Director of the Foreign Language Branch, China Renmin University Press, delivered their speeches on behalf of the host and organizer, respectively. Professor Wang Tongmin, executive vice dean of the Graduate School, DUT, also attended the opening ceremony. The opening ceremony was chaired by professor Sun Chengzhi, vice dean of School of Foreign Languages, DUT.

The forum mainly covers the following issues: language (policy) and philology research, research on syllabus of teaching and vocabulary for postgraduates’ general English courses in the new era, talent training of postgraduates’ general English teaching in the new era, implicit ideological instruction in postgraduates’ general English teaching, arrangement ofpostgraduates’ general English courses, discussion and exchange on the compilation of textbooks, new teaching patterns and new development in foreign languages, the way of development on postgraduates’ general English teaching in the background of “double world-class project”. Six experts were invited to deliver their keynote speeches: “A Research on Emotion of Teachers’ Administrators” delivered by professor Gao Yuan, Dean of Department of Foreign Languages, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences; “Fulfilling National Strategies & Expanding Research Areas” delivered by professor Dai Manchun, Beijing Foreign Studies University; “Key Issues and System Construction in Postgraduates’ General English Teaching” delivered by professor Chang Hui, Dean of the School of Foreign Languages, Shanghai Jiao Tong University; “A Research on the Construction of Postgraduates’ English Courses in Industry-specific Universities under an Interdisciplinary Context” delivered by professor Li Zhi, Dean of School of the Foreign Languages, Beijing Forestry University; “Teaching Patterns of Postgraduates’ General English Courses at Dalian University of Technology” delivered by professor Wang Huili, Director of the Department of Postgraduate Teaching, DUT; “On the Mooc ofEnglish Reading and Writing for Graduate Students (Advanced)” delivered by Dr. Cui Can, College of Foreign Languages, Capital Normal University. The above keynote speakers have paved constructive ways for the development and reform of postgraduates’ general English teaching from different angles, based on their teaching and research experience.

During the parallel sessions, teachers had in-depth discussions and expressed their opinions drawn from their teaching practice, involving topics of implicit ideological instruction in postgraduates’ general English teaching, course arrangement, and talent training of postgraduates’ general English courses, new teaching patterns and new development in foreign languages, and curriculum design of postgraduates’ English listening & speaking and writing courses.

The closing ceremony was chaired by editor Ju Fang’an, in which moderators of each parallel session presented their brief summaries respectively. Chairman Gao Yuan delivered a closing speech, expressing her heartfelt congratulations to the success of the forum and sincere appreciation to School of Foreign Languages, DUT, the organizer of the forum. Professor Sun Chengzhi, on behalf of the organizer, delivered his gratitude to theDivision ofEnglish Teaching and Research, Beijing Association of Higher Education for its trust in the School of Foreign Languages, DUT, and expressed his appreciation to China Renmin University Press for its dedicated support and guidance to this forum.

The National Forum for Postgraduates’ English Teaching and Development has facilitated the exchange of experiences on postgraduates’ general English teaching among different universities and colleges, which represents its modeling role in promoting reform and practice of postgraduates’ general English teaching in higher education institutions.
