ContemporaryDiscourse Research Center

Established in 2021, the ContemporaryDiscourse Research Center is dedicated to the examination and interpretation of the role of discourse in society. We investigate its attributes, motivation, and influence on language, society, and culture within the "building a Chinesediscourse system" era. Our mission is to bolster exchange and collaboration among language researchers, stimulate the advancement of linguistics and foreign language studies, and contribute to public affairs.

Our center boasts a dynamic and highly educated faculty comprised of 10 outstanding members, among which are 3 professors and 3 associate professors. All members possess doctorate degrees and span a diverse range of disciplinary backgrounds and research orientations. Our current director is Professor LiuWenyu, and we are privileged to have esteemed domestic scholars such as Xin Bin, Zhang Hui, Miao Xingwei, Liu Fengguang, and Deng Yaochen as advisors. The center's research interests encompass a myriad of areas including, but not limited to, news discourse, online discourse, political discourse, courtroom discourse, and corporate discourse. Furthermore, our researchers utilize an array of theoretical foundations and methodologies, including critical discourse analysis, social cognitive approach, discourse historical approach, corpus linguistics approach, and multimodal approach.

As of the end of 2022, our members have been granted approval for over a dozen distinct research projects spanning various levels, encompassing four projects from the National Social Science Fund and five programs under the Fund of Humanities and Social Sciences, Ministry of Education. Several of their articles and works have been published in top-tier journals and publishers such as Discourse, Context & Media, Modern Foreign Languages,Foreign Languages and Their Teaching, Foreign Languages Research, Foreign Language Research, Journal of Japanese Language Study and Research, and China Social Sciences Press. The center has also established small-sized corpora featuring online discourse, political discourse, and newspaper news discourses, forming a basis for future research endeavors. We benefit from the support of the university network center, high-performance computing center, National Comprehensive Experimental Demonstration Center of Liberal Arts, and libraries, ensuring reliable assistance in data collection and statistical analysis.

Moving forward, the center will persist in hosting various academic exchange activities such as seminars, lectures, and conferences. By embracing open-minded perspectives and innovative thinking, we will delve deeper into diverse discourses, create a series of high-level academic findings, foster the growth of discourse studies, and generate valuable insights for social decision-making, cultural media, and other fields. We aspire to contribute meaningfully to“tell China's story well” and the discourse construction of "a Community ofShared Future".
