Founded in 2012, the Department of Translation and Interpretationhas cultivatedgraduates for eight years in a row.At the undergraduate level, theMajor of Translation and Interpretationwas approved asthe demonstrationmajor forcommonundergraduatehighereducationinstitutions in Liaoning Province totransform intoapplied highereducationinstitutions in 2017,the provincial first-classundergraduateeducationdemonstrationmajor in 2019, andthe nationalfirst-classundergraduatemajorconstructionsite in 2022. In 2023, the major ranked No.12 in 2023 Best Chinese Universities Ranking, and was rated as a Class A major.
The Department now has 12 full-time teachers, including three professors and seven associate professors. Six teachers are PhDs and six are masters. All teachers have overseas study or visiting experience. Besides, three foreign teachers teach here every year. The Department has won the first prize of Excellent Teaching Achievement Award of Liaoning Province, and has one national high-quality video open course and ten first-class courses in Liaoning Province.
TheMajor of Translation and Interpretation aims atcultivating high-quality inter-disciplinary talentswith profound humanistic quality, global perspective and cross-cultural communication ability, as well as ensuring thatthey know international rules, understand diverse cultures, and have the ability to spread excellent Chinese culture abroad. Students are supposed to havecomprehensive knowledge structure, proficient translation and interpreting ability, strong professional and comprehensiveability, as well as goodpractical and innovation ability.
The Department improves students’ cross-cultural communication skills and global competence through various activities,such as multilingual skill competitions, multilingual cultural performances, translation and interpreting competitions, debate competitions, college students' innovation and entrepreneurship programs, translationpracticeof scientific and academic frontier documents, translationpractice of international engineering professional certification reports, translationpractice for theDalian University of TechnologyHistoryMuseum, Dalian Davos Forum, the Model United Nations, the World University Student Leaders Camp, the Global Youth Leadership Academy and the International Language and Culture Study Camp.
The Department has foreign language smart classrooms, 3D foreign language virtual training rooms,anSDL Trados computer-aided translation laboratory, and a NewClass simultaneous interpretation laboratory.The teachers implements student-centered, problem-oriented, seminar-based, simulation-based and project-based teaching methods to cultivate high-quality translators and interpreters.
The core courses include the following: Integrated English, English Speech and Debate, Critical Thinking and Writing, Introduction to Chinese Culture, Intercultural Communication and Management, Introduction to Translation, English-Chinese Translation, Chinese-English Translation, English Translation of Chinese Culture, News Translation, Liaison Interpreting, Consecutive Interpreting, Foreign Affairs Interpreting, Diplomatic Interpreting andTranslation Technology, etc.
Graduates have the requisite skills and knowledge to engage in any work related to translation, interpreting or international communication in fields such as foreign affairs, science and technology, commerce, finance, management, news, law, etc. in foreign affairs departments of government agencies at all levels, foreign-related enterprises, financial institutions, education and scientific research institutions, etc.
