Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics is one of the three majors for the first-grade discipline Master’s Degree of Foreign Language and Culture in the School of Foreign Languages. These three majors consist of Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, English Language and Literature, and Japanese Language and Literature. Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics aims at cultivating outstanding research-oriented foreign language talents for the nation. It aims to offer students a thorough understanding of the basic theories, academic frontiers and trends of the discipline through relevant courses and to develop their ability to conduct academic research or research-related work independently, and publish papers with good quality and original ideas. This major enjoys a good academic reputation.

1. English Language and Literature

This discipline consists of four subjects, namely: Literature and Philosophy, Western Literary Criticism, British and American Literature and Cross-nation Studies. The subject of Literature and Philosophy consists of theoretical literary philosophy studies, literary hermeneutics studies, poetics studies and novel philosophy studies. Western Literary Criticism consists of western literary criticism studies, post-modern literary criticism studies and Marxist literary theory studies. British and American Literature focuses on modern and contemporary British literature, modern and contemporary American literature and British and American Poetry. Pragmatic Linguistics includes pragmatic discourse analysis, pragmatic grammar studies, communicative patterns studies of doctor-patient discourse and courtroom discourse, morphology and semantics studies. Cross-nation Studies deal with three research fields: cultural diplomacy, regional safety and cross-nation studies.

2. Japanese Language and Literature

This discipline consists of Japanese linguistics, Japanese Literature, Japanese Culture and Translation. Japanese Linguistics includes the comparative studies of Chinese and Japanese language, Japanese grammar studies, second language acquisition and social linguistics. Japanese Literature focuses on the study of Japanese verse, modern and contemporary Japanese literature, and the comparative study of Chinese and Japanese poetry. Japanese Culture covers intercultural speech act, intercultural communication, culture acquisition and culture teaching. The translation orientation includes the study of translation teaching based on corpus and the study of foreign affairs translation in the administrative field.

3. Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics

This discipline encompasses three research fields from English, Japanese and Russian: linguistics, applied linguistics and translation. The linguistics field includes 6 research orientations: semantics, pragmatics, cognitive linguistics, syntax, contemporary discourse and translation; the applied linguistics field includes 9 research orientations: linguistic theory, intercultural communication, second language acquisition, psychological linguistics, neurocognitive linguistics, English pedagogy, syllabus design, lexicography and language testing. The translation studies include 3 research fields: English translation of Chinese classics, theory and practice of English translation of Chinese classics and the construction and application of Chinese-English and multilingual corpus of Chinese classics translation. Japanese linguistics includes 6 research orientations: the comparative studies of Chinese and Japanese language, Japanese grammar, second language acquisition, sociolinguistics, intercultural speech act studies and intercultural communication competence studies. Russian linguistics includes 6 research orientations: linguistic theories, pragmatics, lexicology, rhetoric, intercultural speech act theory and intercultural communication.
